A simple household checklist
- Check the current rules and any temporary restrictions for your water corporation.
- Use a leak-free hose fitted with a trigger nozzle where the rules require one.
- Water at a time and in a way that limits evaporation and runoff.
- Repair leaking taps, fittings and irrigation lines promptly.
- Sweep paths and driveways first; use water only where the rules allow and the surface actually needs washing.
- Direct water away from stormwater drains where contaminated wash water could enter them.
Better watering is about the soil
Frequent shallow watering can encourage shallow roots. For an established garden, the right approach depends on soil, plant type, shade, season and recent rain. Mulch and careful weed control can reduce evaporation, but mulch should be kept clear of trunks and building weep holes.
